I have been wanting to read this book for quite a while now so I was super psyched when I was gifted a copy. I've now read it TWICE!
It's such a relief to finally have a modern, up-to-date book about breasts that is written by a true expert in the field.
We are living in an age where we have so much information at our fingertips that finding a balanced view on such a subject can be overwhelming. Especially for pre-teens and teens. Emma takes all of the “need-to-know” information about breasts and presents it in a friendly manner that is educational and well balanced. The book is broken down into 8 easy to read chapters with colour, photographs and illustrations to break up the usual monotony of educational materials.
I rather appreciated the tone that the book is written in. It comes across as quite casual and conversational whilst still conveying important information on topics such as breastfeeding, bra wearing and consent.
I especially enjoyed the personal stories. It's nice to know that other people are going through the same things as you. I particularly enjoyed Jack's story as it is a story I identify with on a personal level. I imagine having this book when I was younger would have made my life a little bit easier. Jack’s story is essential in books like this. I won’t lie, reading his words made me tear up! I also heartily recommend reading Where’s The Mother by Trevor MacDonald (who Emma mentions at the end of Jack’s story). It’s also good to see Emma inform readers that they have choices when it comes to their bodies. That is missing from mainstream education about our bodies.
Whilst I believe this book is aimed at young women, I believe it's also important for older women and even men to read. Society teaches women to be ashamed of their bodies especially their breasts and this book looks at that and gives many reasons why girls and women needn't be ashamed of their breasts or their bodies. I even learned a few new things myself!
My favourite part of the book is the “Things to Remember" at the end.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone of any age who has questions about breasts. I think I will pass my copy on to my sisters, all of whom have young daughters.
