Novelty Crayons

Every couple of weeks I get to sort through the pen pots in the playroom. There are always lots of broken pieces of crayon stuck in the bottom of the pots that no one wants to use.

Today, I decided to fish out those broken pieces to give them a new lease of life!

We set some ramekins in a shallow pan with hot water and turned the heat to medium. This can be done in the microwave and even directly into the moulds, however, this way round we have more control over the melting and we don't have to juggle a floppy mould!

Whilst we were waiting for the water to heat up, we peeled all of the crayon pieces. We sorted them by colour then put the broken pieces into the ramekins.

We waited until all pieces were melted then gave them a stir with lollypop sticks to even out the colour.

We had a look through the baking drawer for moulds and settled on Easter shapes. We placed the mould on a baking tray so nothing would spill.

Once the crayons were melted with no lumps, we used a funnel to pour the mix into the moulds. Colours can be mixed if you wish.

Once the moulds were filled, we placed them in the fridge for 30 minutes until they set hard.

Once you are sure they have hardened thoroughly, pop them out of the moulds and there you have it! Fun shaped crayons with no waste.

Shaped crayons are fun to use and don't break so easily!

You can make them any size and shape too!

When cleaning up, be sure not to wash the remnants of the wax down the sink. Use a damp hot cloth to wipe out the way then throw in the bin.
