Big got this wonderful Kidz Labs Light Kaleidoscope for her birthday and has been desperate to give it a go.
The kaleidoscope has an age recommendation of 8+ but I was supervising so she's fine.
There were a few small parts and a screwdriver was required for the battery cover but I am confident that Big could have followed the instructions by herself.
All of the pieces slot easily together with just one screw in piece.
Once we got the pieces together, we went to the toilet (the darkest room as it has no windows) and switched it on.
The colours on the white display disc were cyan magenta and yellow (or blue pink and yellow as Big corrected me!).
I asked her what colour she thought the lights were underneath and she said "of course they are blue pink and yellow Mim!".
We took the top off and the lights were actually blue red and green.
Big was surprised by this "light magic" so I took the time to explain the primary colours of light and pigment and how the artist colour wheel showing blue, yellow and red was discovered by Newton's prism experiments. This is what she was learning in school.
We spoke about how bright the lights were and how they faded once the white display was added to the kaleidoscope. We also spoke briefly about additive and subtractive colours and how they are mixed to create other colours.
We then added the pattern templates and played around with the shapes. This was the best part!
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed this birthday gift. It was easy to build, fun to play with AND educational!
We give the Kidz Labs Light Kaleidoscope 5 nanny hands.
